In May of 2006, I traveled to a remote part of Siberian Russia: Olkhon Island, located on Lake Baikal. This is my story.

The Russian village of Khuzhir is home to roughly 1200 people. It is the largest village on the island of Olkhon, located in Siberia's Lake Baikal.
Known as Burkhan in the native Buryat and as Shamanka in Russian, this stunning rock formation is the holiest site on the island of Olkhon, located on Lake Baikal in Siberian Russia. Locals leave offerings of coins, alcohol and cigarettes to appease the spirits.
