Hiking on the windward side of any Hawaiian island means wet weather, muddy conditions and the threat of heavy rains. This trail is subject to all these factors, but the wet weather means waterfalls are plentiful, the vegetation is greener and the cooler conditions make for a nice comfortable hike.

  2. Nounou Mountain

    Sleeping Giants
Kauai, 4 mile out & back trail, medium difficulty.
    Elevation gain: 1,100ft (from 200 - 1,300ft)

Nounou Mountain rises from the leeward (Eastern) lands of Kauai. Local legend tells of a giant who feasted so much at a party in his honor that he laid down for a nap and never awoke, and since the hike up East Nounou Mountain trail takes you straight over his head and up his nose, you might want to cross you fingers that he doesn't wake up while you're around.

This is a nice little hike if you're in the area, and a great way of sampling some of Kauai's exotic plantlife and bird population.

  3. Land's End

Land's End and adjacent Lincoln Park stretch from Ocean Beach & the Cliff House northwest to the wealthy Seacliff neighborhood (ask a local to point out Robin Williams' house). A trail follows the coastline along the park's length, offering fantastic views of the nearby Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge, the art deco VA Hospital, and the Pacific Ocean.

Its somewhat remote location in the Richmond District means you likely won't get stuck in a crowd (aside from those rare warm Saturdays), even though the Legion Of Honor museum is just up the road.

  5. Zion Trail

A Beautiful winding trail through the autumn colors of Zion National Park in Utah. Sometimes you have to make photographs while looking down at the ground, instead of up at the peaks!

After spending most of a week in our tents watching rainstorms pass thru we decided to bail out of the Southern Picketts in the North Cascades NP. Our choices were slim - a long 2 day traverse involving several rock faces, or the quick route - a descent of 4,000' thru Devil's Club, downed timber and other underbrush.

Austin, Texas is the live-music capital of the world - or so they say. Sixth Street is filled with bars, restaurants and clubs and the Hike and Bike Trail along Lady Bird Lake, smack in the middle of the city, is very popular.

  8. Barmer

"Travelling to the edges of the world does not require traversing long distances. They may actually be found, folded between the seams of modernity", said my fellow traveller casually when our travel agent asked if Barmer was for real.

Destination Barmer is meant only for the footloose.
