Hey, Colosseum.
Vesuvius towers over the town of Pompeii
Tour guides take a break for a chat and a fag under the Vesuvius gate
Buried under 20 metres of volcanic mud, Herculaneum (Ercolano) is incredibly well preserved, with lots of wood and organic material still in place. It has been largely built over though so there is still a large area unrecovered.
There aren't many statues left in Herculaneum - most have been moved to the archaeological museum in Naples (which is well worth a visit)
Inside a villa with window grates still intact
Inside the cool room of the public baths for Roman women
This is an absolutely amazing villa- the summer home of Nero's second wife, and incredibly well preserved. Large parts of it are still buried under several metres of volcanic mud, but the rooms you can access are beautifully decorated.
As it is less well known than Pompeii and Herculaneum we were lucky to have the place to ourselves - I would recommend a visit
