There are far fewer people at the beaches in Oregon than in California, but Highway 101 running right along much of the coast here channels tourist from all over the state to sea-side resorts. Towns on that route have all the cheap t-shirts you could want, but my favorite places in Oregon are off of a road less traveled.
Cape Kiwanda is located just outside Pacific City and is the southern most cape in the three capes scenic route. It is a popular location for surfers, wakeboarders, and beachcombers.
The Astor Column is an Astoria icon, towering 125’ above this historical and scenic little town. You will wind around the roads with gorgeous scenery to Coxcomb Hill.
Pt. Dume state beach features some of the most beautiful scenery in LA county.
This beautiful beach is well known by locals but if you didn't know it was there you would drive right past it. Just West of Highway 1 at Fassler Avenue in Pacifica California you will find ocean front hotels, dinning, numerous shops and a visitor center.
Ruby Beach is one of the most spectacular beaches on the West Coast of North America. Keep in mind one thing...
Haystack Rock is found off of the coast of Oregon. It can be viewed by standing on Cannon Beach.
Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the many (and easily accessible) lighthouses scattered along the California coastline. The last time I’ve been there, the federal government was trying to sell the lighthouse to a private party because the $1 million annual maintenance cost was burning a hole in their budget.
Santa Barbara, California, famous for its mission and general Spanish architectural style.
While Bixby Bridge is one of the most photographed bridges in California, it is likely that neighboring Big Creek Bridge takes top honors. Traveling north five miles beyond Lucia on Route 1, you'll see the bridge in the distance and a paved and often busy parking lot where people are out of their cars looking and taking photos.
