It's true that Iceland is expensive because most ingredients have to be shipped from Europe. But whale and puffin? They have plenty of those!

We never saw them, so we ate them

Smoked puffin at Carpe Diem

After driving through the south of Iceland, we ended in Reykjavik to rest and live the city life for two days. We have been cooking and fending for ourselves the last five and Reykjavik allowed us to sample the local flavor without any effort other than opening our wallets wide.

1. Vin og Skel
Laugavegur 55
101 Reykjavík
- stands for Wine and Shell, we had amazing seafood here including a to-die-for whale carpaccio

2. Carpe Diem
Raudaararstig 18
105 Reykjavik
- our lamb was overdone, but they had puffin meat

3.Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur
Pósthússtræti
101 Reykjavik
- a hot dog stand outside the flea market; popular for being visited by Bill Clinton

4. Kebab Husid
Grensasvegur
- their downtown store just burned down when I visited, so we had to go their new location; for your fish and chips, gyro and kebab cravings; oh, they have football on TV, too

5. The Ugly Duckling
Lækjargata 6b
101 Reykjavík
- bar food with your afternoon beers
