La Sagrada Familia stands in the background of the view from the Hotel Silken Diagonal, while the Torre Agbar looms right next door. Barcelona, Spain, August, 2007.

About this place:

Designed with a modern sensibility and opened in 2004, the Hotel Silken Diagonal sits across from Las Glories shopping center on the Avinguda Diagonal in the center of Barcelona.

Additionally, the hotel is just a short walk from a subway entrance as well as being a 20 minute walk from La Sagrada Familia and the modern Gracia district.

The hotel features excellent, English speaking staff, as well as a restaurant and two bars. One of the bars is located on the roof, which doubles as an observation deck, as well as being the location of the relaxation pool. The 360 degree view from the deck is one of the best features of the hotel, affording a look at La Sagrada Familia, as well as south towards downtown.

The rooms are clean and modern, with cable, air conditioning, wireless facilities, a small safe, and many other conveniences.

My wife and I were traveling to Europe together for the first time and we wanted a hotel that was a little classier than usual, something a little more modern and contemporary in its design. We checked into the Hotel Silken Diagonal early on a Tuesday afternoon and were immediately impressed with the staff and facilities. We made it a habit during our week long stay to make use of the pool and observation deck on the roof and marveled at the view of La Sagrada Familia, just a few miles from the hotel. It was exactly what we wanted.
