In 1884, Sarah Winchester's contractors began construction of a Victorian mansion. Working without blueprints – using the home owner's sketches on paper and tablecloths – construction continued twenty-four hours a day for thirty-eight years.
Only the rifle heiresses’ death ended the massive construction project.
The mysterious mansion – containing 160 rooms, 40 staircases, 47 fireplaces and 950 doors (a few of which open onto brick walls) – is now open to the public.
